Fic of the Week: The Calling, by A Manley Haight, Rating: NC-17/FRAO
Hi All,

This week's fic is The Calling, by A Manley Haight, Rating NC-17/FRAO.
Summary (Provided by Chevron17): An exploration of the Watcher-Slayer bond. Angsty!Giles is driven to find Buffy during the summer after she runs away. Nice Watcher-Slayer badassery in taking down some nasty vamps, and very satisfying, amazing, and long sex. Most definitely AO rated. Good mutual physical/mental/emotional hurt/comfort. Postitive ending.
Warnings: Underage fic. Buffy is still a few months shy of her 18th birthday.

Please leave your thoughts and reviews in the comments and I hope to see you all on the chats this weekend. :)

I come stumbling out of my exam week, my hand cramped and my mind hurting. What to I find awaiting me? a GilesBuffy fanfic that hits on my fanfic kinks at once. Bless this group. I will be doing a later comment on my thoughts on the fic, but I wanted to write this first one to let people know that I am still alive. EXAMS HAVE NOT KILLED ME. *dances to I will survive*

So where to start with this fanfic? Let's start with the stuff I really liked.
(1) I loved that watchers and their slayers are connected in a magically way.
(3) I like that Buffy and Giles own each other. Which both of them having equal standing in their relationship. I like that Giles submitted to her, and is willing to wait for Buffy to submit to him. I like that he doesn't force to submit right away, because Buffy may want to but it doesn't mean she is ready yet.
(4) I love how the fanfic writer made up her own stories (The watcher blood thing). As sadly, in the real canon we were not given much on the connection between watchers and slayers
(5) Can I say the sex scene again? CAUSE THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL. CAN I MARRY THE SEX SCENE?
(6) Also, my kink is age difference. So yeah this fanfic made me happy in every way

Things I did not like:
(1) Giles and Buffy really came off out of character some times. Though this may just be attributed to the fact that I haven't watched the season two or three in a while
(2)That's it.
I loved this fanfic. Now if you excuse me I have a sex scene to read again...

The Watcher/Slayer Bond was only something Joss only touched on and to an extent, I am really sad about that because wouldn't it have been awesome to see what it really would've been like, but I fear that in typical Joss fashion, it would've been "Jossed" in some way and I would've been upset with his version. It was probably better that he didn't go into it and it allows for fanfic writers to explore it further. :)

Oh and the sex was really intense. LOL

I really liked this fic, though it takes some level of disbelief for me to ship Giles and Buffy before season 4 and really not until season 5. I think the potential is there and I do think they adore each other before hand, but I don't really think it's likely they would get together before then. That being said, I wasn't watching the show as the seasons unfolded, nor participating in the fandom. So who knows what would've happened back then. But I definitely would've ended up shipping them no matter what.

For me, I think the big thing that allowed for that suspension of disbelief was the presence of the presence of the Bond. It simply created the awareness in the Watcher and Slayer that allowed for them to find each other and ultimately bring them together.

I really like the fact that Buffy was holding back with Giles and I liked how he wasn't offended by it. That he'd wait for her to be ready with that. She's still processing the whole thing with Angel and I think it would've been extremely rushed and not really believable had she declared her love for Giles just then.

One thing that bothered in the story was the vamp gang following Giles around. The author even told part of the story from their POV, so I was expecting some real drama and then when the drama happened, it felt really anticlimactic to me. Sure we get to see some badass-ery from Giles. He protects Buffy, we find out his blood is poisonous to vamps during the calling, but the whole buildup didn't pay off in the end.

The other thing that bothered me was towards the end, when Buffy brings up the book Lolita by Nabakov. 1) I thought it was out of character of her to do so, 2) I thought it was highly insensitive and rude, and it clearly hurt Giles, and 3) I felt it had no place in the story.

In the end, though, I think this fic was really well done and I enjoyed it. It was intense, the emotions were high, and the reader was drawn into it immediately. The author's exploration of the Bond and the history and magicks surrounding it were phenomenal, and I wish there was a follow on to the story where we see Buffy surrender to Giles and the process she goes through to feel ready for that.

Good story! :)
