Fic of the week: Serendipity by Elle; Rating NC-17/FRAO
Happy Monday. We had a tie in our fic of the week poll, which means that we will read one fic this week and the other next week. :)

So, this week's fic will be Serendipity by Elle, rating NC-17/FRAO for the main reason that I am feeling in a haunted house kind of mood, and since I am the mod, well, it's my prerogative. ;)
Summary: Buffy and Giles are stranded in a haunted house. The title comes from a blurb from a movie with the same name: "When fate has a sense of humor, it's called serendipity."
Setting: Season 4.

If you feel inclined to share with the class, please leave your impressions, reviews, etc, about the fic in the comments below. We'd love to hear what you think. :)

This fic gets the honor of being the only fic that I refuse to finish. I have read many fanfics, many I hated but I always read them to the end. Either in hope that they would get better, or because the fic was entertaining bad. This was either. Maybe I am being harsh, but I really hate how Buffy is portrayed in this fic. Yes, Buffy gets scared but this fic out right chickifices her. For those who have no idea what that means, here is the basic idea. Chickification is when a piece of fiction takes what is usually a strong developed female character *who can take care of her self* into a whimpy scared little virgin that needs to be saved by a man. God I hate that trope. I hate it so bloody much. Maybe it wasn't the fanfic writer's fault. But Buffy. BUFFY. Who fights vampires on the daily, and has fought off gods. Would not be scared of a house or breaking mirrors. yes it would surprise her, but she wouldn't go running for Giles. If the mirror broke in her room, Buffy would look around the house and tied to find out what is going on. I don't know who this lady is in this fic but it isn't buffy.
That is the reason I dropped this fic half way though. I can handle characters being oc being written differently, everyone sees a character in a different way. What I can not stand for is someone taking the basic of who/what the character is that I get pissed. For example, I hate in the free! fandom when people write Makoto as jerk. because he isn't one. And in the thor fandom, I hate people that let Loki get off with all the shit he does, because he is hot. Most of all I hate Chickification. That is the worst thing you can do. It takes the basic concept of a female character actually, you know, having DEPTH. And turns them into a stereotype.
So no, I do not like this fic. I hate it. If you like it fine, whatever. I am not a type of person that judges others on what they like. Hell I like shit, that others hate. Just know that my hatred of this fic is so intense it could set fire to the rain.

Wow, that is quite the negative reaction you had! Not that I can blame you at all.

I just finished the fic and have to admit, I didn't read it as chickification as such, but I did find Buffy very out of character in that she didn't jump to action several times, especially when the mirror tipped over. At the very least, she'd wake Giles and they'd thoroughly investigate the place, which actually would've been funny because it would've foiled the plans of the hosts/ghosts.

But the author, I thought, had tried to set up the idea from the beginning that the house did give Buffy the "wiggens" even if Giles didn't feel it. He actually found it more fascinating, especially in light that everything in the house was anachronistic.

Anyway, I think she was trying to invoke the feeling from the season 4 episode "Fear Itself" to where Buffy does break down and succumb to fear. In the end she breaks free, but she spends rather a long time fighting fears (and the house) before she is victorious and it is Giles who comes to everyone's rescue there (along with Anya).

I kind of like stories where there is one mundane thing Buffy doesn't deal with... like how Indiana Jones doesn't do snakes. It makes her human. But I have to agree, this fic comes up very short. It's not realistic. Now if the author had taken up the mantel of having Buffy and Giles enact out a scene using expected gender roles from an earlier time (turn of the century whatever) then that would've been different (obviously leaving the sexytimes out until they are fully themselves again).

I didn't like this story. I felt that the second half was much more awkward than the first half. It was rushed and there was angst for the sake of angst. It didn't further the plot and the dialogue wasn't in character. Oh well.

I didn't get to the end of this one either. Does anyone know of other haunted house B/G fics out there?

There is another one that I know of. It takes place in season 5, I think. And Giles is going to investigate a haunted house before they tear it down or sell it or something on Halloween (I think). Buffy gets wind of it and wants to go with him, so he relents. I think it's on ODD, but that site is a bear to search on. I wish I could remember who wrote it. That would narrow it down.
