Fic of the Week: The Long Way Home, by Sahiya, Rating: PG/FRT
Ok, so we ended up with another tie. This time it was between The Long Way Home by Sahiya and Ripper's Redemption by Gibberish. Since I wasn't quite on the ball last week, we didn't have time to try to break the tie, so instead of taking recs for next week's fic, we will read one this week and the other the next.

This week's fic is The Long Way Home by Sahiya. Summary: Buffy and Giles are both idiots. Faith nudges them in the right direction. Setting: Post Series, comics included. This was written in 2008, so the bad thing that happened to Giles hasn't happened yet. Please note that you don't need to have read the comics to understand what is going on in the story. The author does a good job paraphrasing. :)

Please feel free to leave your comments, thoughts, reviews in the comments below. Also, the chats have been fantastic! If you find yourself at loose ends and haven't jumped on the chats during the weekend chat times, please feel free to do so. Everyone has been extremely insightful, respectful, fun, and a tad crazy at times. We've actually written two very cracky group ficlets on the chat by being silly and going with the flow. Good times!

This was actually my first time reading this fic. I thought I'd read all the B/G fics out there. Especially the ones that have been around for a few years. So my thoughts:

I liked when Giles freaked out about sleeping with Buffy. I thought that was very truthful to his character. He's believed his whole life that watchers and slayers are suppose to have a certain relationship, and then suddenly he crosses that line and there's no way to go back. I believe he would push Buffy away, using duty as the excuse, we saw it in season 6.

I also like how Giles tries to find what he's looking for in the other slayers, namely Faith, but it doesn't feel right. Because it's not Buffy, and he knows that's the reason. And I like how Faith knows it too.

I feel Faith would push him away. Because she knows she can never be his number one girl. She knows Buffy is the only slayer in his heart, and she doesn't want to be second best.

Anyway, I liked a lot of things about this fic. I can't really think of anything at the moment to complain about so I'll just leave it at that.

I agree with will_conqueror1. Giles was really in character in this fic, which is always a blessing in fanfiction where out-of-character moments are common place. I liked that Giles had a freak out, and pulled the "I'm leaving you to protect you card" because that is something Giles would do. In fact that is something he did, note him leaving in season six, so Buffy would learn to stand on her own two feet. Naturally he is in the wrong (both in fic and canon), and comes back. I also liked that Faith was not treated as a villain, instead she was treated like the character she is. Someone that is hurt, and is trying to do good. I almost cried when she decided to help Giles and Buffy out. Why? Because she realizes that if she helps Giles realize how much of a idiot he is being, he will leave her. She willing gives up the man, that is helping her. Bless Faith, bless everything she is. I also liked the ending, mainly because I am a sap for happy endings. The things I didn't...well I didn't like how short the fanfic was. I wanted more of it XD I didn't like Buffy character much in this fic, but this is not the writer fault, as it follows her character arc in season seven(which I have many issues with). As for the fanfic itself, I can not really think on the top of my head anything I didn't like. It was well written, the characters were in character and there was a sappy happy ending!
So, I am very excited for the next fanfic. This one, was really good. So I have high hopes for the next one.
